Tried both the meatball and sausage hot sandwiches... Both were absolutely phenomenal! Focaccia, marinara, and cheese on both sandwiches were delectable.
Highly recommend this spot for the great vibes, attentive staff and quality food and drinks. Definitely will be back here to nurse some future hangovers and/or just grab a bite and drink! -

The longer I live in North Beach, the more I appreciate its history, character and coffee shops. Slowly, but surely, Mario's has been climbing up the charts!
After an afternoon of snoozing, chatting and people watching at Washington Square Park, P and I went to Mario's for a quick bite to eat. We grabbed a table outside as it was one of those beautiful 'we can't stay inside' afternoons in SF, but it was a hard call as the inside is cozy, still bright with its big open windows, and lively with fun music and conversation. I love how colorful and yet cozy the cafe is!
I had the chicken#2 focaccia sandwich, he had the salami panini. I had had the mozzarella and pesto panini before and fell in love. Everything in the sandwich - from the bread to the tenderness of the chicken - was amazing! I look forward to spending more times at this classic bohemian spot! -

After having come so highly recommended by a socialite friend who lived in the City for years I can say that I was not that impressed. The meatball on focaccia is what sounded most appetizing to me so I rolled with it. What I got was more along the lines of a meatloaf sandwich; meatballs and meatloaf and kinda the same but not really. It was fine but the meat didn't have the quintessential meatball taste and there was a dearth of red sauce. I can deal with that but I was not happy with how burnt the focaccia bread was. I get it that they don't have a kitchen and everything goes into the small oven behind the bar but I this type of bread is meant to be soft and light, not hard and compact. I might stop in again and try the lasagna.

It is a chill place. So for drinks, outdoor seating in a great area it is a 4! For food depends on what you order. We ordered the pizza and the Italian sausage & peppers on panini. Yeah I wasn't so sure about a classic Italian sandwich on panini and for me I was right. I will skip this. The pizza was ok nothing to write home about especially when you have two of the best ever walking distance. But again for the ambiance & drinks 4 hands down.
